Runner-up at Swiss Cup Basel

me. Wow – what a fantastic week-end in Arlesheim! Yet again, the Swiss Cup Basel gave the competitors everything they needed: great ice, terrific food, plenty of spectators and the best possible environment. A big ‘thank you’ to the organising committee and to all the helpers at the Swiss Cup Basel!

After 3 victories in succession against Snitil, Werthemann and Murdoch, we qualified for the A final. Rather annoyingly we lost a really good game against the strong Swedish team headed by skip Edin after an extra end. This meant that we soon had to tackle the B semi-final. Still rather downcast and washed out after that painful defeat, we got off to a poor start against Scotland (Brewster), although we managed to catch up pretty well. Ultimately, though, we lacked that extra degree of luck that we would have needed for victory and – for the second time in five hours – we lost after an extra end.

That meant that we were whisked from the A final directly into the C semi-final, which we won with a fairly good margin against Norway 2 (Andreassen). Then, in the C final, we were locked into a duel with the reigning Swiss champions (Pescia). After we stole three stones in the 5th end the game was ours, which meant that we had, after all, managed to qualify for the quarter-final on Sunday evening.

This brought us into another duel against Scotland (Brewster). Once again, the Scots played a very defensive and really rather uninspiring game. We evened out the score in the 6th end with two points and stole another 3 stones during the 7th end. That was the decider, and brought us our 3rd successive qualification for the semi-final of the Swiss Cup in Basel.

The semis also gave us an opportunity for revenge. Once again we came up against the brilliantly playing and hitherto unbeaten Swedes under Skip Edin. This thrilling and offensively played game lasted 2 ¾ hours. After trailing 2:4 we caught up in the 7th end and the last end saw us 6:5 ahead. The last draw of the extra end saw Edin just catch a guard. This propelled us into the final against Canada under skip Gushue, that team having won its semi-final against St. Moritz under skip Karnusian.

This contest gave the large number of spectators yet another thrilling game with a very high standard of play. In the 5th end we scored 3 points and took the lead with 4:2. Then, the Canadians caught up in the 6th end. For quite a while it looked during the 7th end as if we would come out on top. Having the advantage of the last stone, we were up at one point with 4 stones shot. With Ralph’s last attempt we had an opportunity for a promotion double take-out that would have given us at least 2, if not 3, stones. Alas, the stone curled a little too much and that enabled the Canadians to steal 1 stone. The last end also placed victory within our reach. Before the last stone the team decided against an extra end (with a draw) and for an ‘all-or-nothing’ stone. The last try – a slanted promotion take-out over about 4 metres – missed its objective by a whisker and cost us victory in the Swiss Cup Basel 2008.

Nonetheless we can be quite satisfied with our performance. Above all, with 10 games under our belts (7 wins and 3 defeats) we feel well and truly warmed up for the challenges ahead.

Together with our coach Russ Howard, who will be with us throughout October, we will now carefully analyse the tournament and get in plenty of training. Roll on, the next WCT-E tournament in Berne – we can’t wait!
